Chipaya is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Chipaya is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Chipaya in the province of Sabaya on the Bolivian Altiplano . Chipaya located at an altitude of 3,675 meters above sea level in the delta of the Lauca River on the northern edge of the salt lake Salar de Coipasa .

The climate in the region is semi-arid and a typical time of day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than during the course of the seasons.
The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost . Transport network
Chipaya is located at a distance of 202 kilometers by road southwest of Oruro , the capital of the department.
From Oruro, the unpaved road Ruta 12 leads via Toledo , Ancaravi and Huachacalla to Esmeralda and on via Sabaya to Pisiga on the Chilean border and to Colchane in Chile . Two kilometers south of Esmeralda, a dirt road branches off from Ruta 12 in a south-easterly direction and reaches Chipaya via the village of Charcollo after 32 kilometers .

The population of the Municipio Chipaya increased between 2001 and 2010 from 1,814 inhabitants to 2,849 inhabitants. The predominant colloquial language is Chipaya , most of the residents also speak Spanish , and many also speak Aymara as a second or third language .
