The municipality of Pocona is a district in the department of Cochabamba in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Pocona is one of six municipalities in the province of Carrasco . It is bordered by the Arani Province to the west, the Mizque Province to the southwest, the Narciso Campero Province to the south , the Municipio Totora to the east , and the Tiraque Province to the north .

The central place of the municipality is Pocona with 440 inhabitants in the north-western part of the municipality, the largest village is Chullchungani with 518 inhabitants. ( 2012 census )

The municipality of Pocona is located in one of the high valleys of the Cordillera Oriental mountain range , which merges east into the Bolivian lowlands. The region's climate is characterized by a typical daytime climate in which the temperature differences between day and night are more pronounced than between the seasons.

The annual average temperature is 14 ° C, the monthly values ​​fluctuate between 11 ° C in June / July and 16 ° C in November / December (see Totora climate diagram). The annual precipitation is 600 mm and falls mainly in the summer months from December to February with monthly values ​​of 100 to 125 mm; This contrasts with a dry season from May to October with monthly precipitation of less than 30 mm.

Due to the favorable wind conditions, the municipality was selected as the location for the first Qollpana wind farm . The second stage was inaugurated on September 9, 2016. At this point in time, the plant with its nine 3 MW turbines from the German manufacturer Enercon has a capacity of around 27 MW. A third expansion stage is already planned.
