Murighiol is a municipality in the Tulcea County in Romania .
Geographical location
The municipality of Murighiol is located in the historic Dobruja region and borders directly on the Danube Delta biosphere reserve and the Lacul Razim lagoon on the Black Sea .
etymology
The name Murighiol comes from Turkish. It is made up of the words mor ("violet") and göl ("lake"), meaning "violet lake".
population
In the 2011 census, of the 3,164 inhabitants of the entire municipality of Murighiol at that time, 94.6% were Romanians , 4.5% Ukrainians and 0.4% Turks .
Infrastructure
The most important traffic artery in the region is the district road ( Drum județean ) DJ 222C, which creates a connection to the district capital Tulcea . The road is currently not (yet) asphalted on the whole route, but is being expanded (status: 2015).
Attractions
The main attraction of the region is the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Boat tours into the delta can be undertaken from the tourist town of Murighiol.
In the vicinity of Murighiol there is also the archaeological excavation site Halmyris , which is open to tourists. From the first to the fourth century AD Halmyris was a Roman fortress and part of the border fortifications of the Roman Empire ( Limes ). The fortress was presumably first built under Emperor Trajan and expanded several times over the course of several centuries. It included barracks and a bathhouse, among other things. The complex was partially exposed in two excavation periods. Following the excavation, parts were restored and fortified or roofed or shielded for conservation purposes. However, a not inconsiderable part of the system has not yet been exposed (as of 2015). A new museum, partly financed with EU funds, in which finds from Halmyris are to be presented, is under construction.
