Sfântu Gheorghe [ ˈsfɨn.tu ˈɡe̯or.ɡe ], until 1993 Sfîntu Gheorghe (in German: Sankt Georg ) is a town in the Tulcea district in Dobruja in Romania . It is located on the southernmost arm of the Danube Delta , named after it, directly on the Black Sea .

Sfântu Gheorghe has a town center with a community hall, a restaurant and a few grocers. In the area there are mostly one-story houses, often with a Byzantine touch.

economy

The main livelihoods of the population are fishing , shipping and tourism . Tourists come to the Danube Delta to explore ( nature tourism ), for bird-watching or fishing for beach holidays or to make the annual film festival Anonimul (see below) to visit. Many residents offer guest rooms. There is a campsite, smaller hotels, a four-star holiday resort and an official swimming beach.

In addition, the population does some subsistence farming . In the area around Sfântu Gheorghe there are about 7000 horses and not quite as many cattle. The horses serve as riding and draft animals; they are of the pony type . The cattle are used for milk and meat production; they are descended from Romanian land races that were crossed with Central European races.

Since October 2015, Sfântu Gheorghe has also been one of the international breeding locations for Tauros cattle . In the long term, these are to be released into the wild as successors to the extinct wild form of the aurochs in the Danube Delta and take on its ecological role in the delta.

The international independent film festival Anonimul takes place in Sfântu Gheorghe every August. The annual number of visitors is around 5000.

There are no paved roads to Sfântu Gheorghe. All goods and people are transported by ship and then mostly loaded into horse-drawn wagons. The ferries to Tulcea run several times a day.

nature

Sfântu Gheorghe is located in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve at the mouth of the southernmost arm of the Danube. Three strictly protected nature reserves are part of the municipality.

The largest of the three is Sacalin-Zătoane , a more than 214 square kilometers large nature reserve of the IUCN category IV biotope / species protection area . It is the largest contiguous protected area in the biosphere reserve and is located south-west of the village on the other side of the river. The Sakhalin-Zătoane nature reserve is a bird sanctuary . It offers a suitable nesting place and food for numerous birds, including the largest colonies of Dalmatian pelican ( Pelecanus crispus ) and sandwich tern ( Thalasseus sandvicensis ) in the delta area.

The 50 hectare Erenciuc alder forest extends 15 km northwest of the village at the southern end of Lake Erenciuc. The forest is the only large contiguous population of black alder ( Alnus glutinosa ) in the biosphere reserve. It is a nesting area for the white-tailed eagle ( Haliaeetus albicilla ).

Finally, south of the Erenciuc forest, on the other side of the river, is Lake Belciug . It has an area of ​​1.1 km 2 and a depth of up to 6 meters. It serves to preserve endangered fish species and provides food and a suitable breeding ground for numerous migratory birds.
