The Erenciuc alder forest ( Romanian Arinișul Erenciuc ) is a protected area in nature and landscape protection of IUCN Category IV Biotope and Species Protection Area ( bird sanctuary ) in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve National Park . It is located in the area of ​​the city of Sfântu Gheorghe , in the Tulcea district , in Romania .

The Erenciuc alder forest was designated a nature reserve of national importance by law number 5 of March 6, 2000 and court order number 2.151 of November 30, 2004 . As part of the National Park Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, he is part of the World Heritage of UNESCO .

The Erenciuc alder forest is located in the south of the Danube Delta, near the mouth of the Danube into the Black Sea . It extends on both sides of Lake Erenciuc , on the area of ​​the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe and has an area of ​​0.5 km². The Erenciuc alder forest was first placed under nature protection in 1938, since 1990 it has been part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, and since 2000 it has been under strict nature protection.

Flora and fauna

The Erenciuc alder forest was designated as a biotope in 2000 to preserve the only alder population in the reserve. It consists of extensive, contiguous areas of black alder ( Alnus glutinosa ) and houses the only alder population in the Danube Delta. The Erenciuc alder forest is also important for bird life. The white- tailed eagle ( Haliaeetus albicilla ) occasionally nests here .
