Lake Potcoava is a protected area in nature and landscape protection of IUCN Category IV biotope and species protection area ( water and bird sanctuary ) in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve National Park . It is located on the area of ​​the municipality of Crișan , in the Tulcea district , in Romania .

Lake Potcoava was designated a nature reserve of national importance by law number 5 of March 6, 2000 and court order number 2.151 of November 30, 2004 . As part of the National Park Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, he is part of the World Heritage of UNESCO .

The Potcoava Lake extends in the north of the Danube Delta, on the area of ​​the municipality of Crișan, in the district of Tulcea. It is part of the Obretinul Mic – Gorgova lake complex , which also includes the Babinții Mari , Babinții Mici and Potcoava lakes . An area of ​​6.25 km² was placed under nature protection for the first time in 1994 and designated as a biotope for species protection in 2000 and incorporated into the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve National Park.

The Potcoava Lake is a habitat for many species of birds such as the purple heron ( Ardea purpurea ), Rallenreiher ( Ardeola ralloides ), Gray Heron ( Ardea cinerea ), Common Moorhen ( Gallinula chloropus ), Glossy Ibis ( Plegadis falcinellus ), Pygmy Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax pygmeus ), Water Rail ( Rallus aquaticus ), grebe ( Tachybaptus ruficollis ), bittern ( Ixobrychus minutus ), bittern ( Botaurus stellaris ), Schnatterente ( Anas strepera ), Kolbenente ( Netta rufina ), Red-necked ( podiceps grisegena ) and Eagle ( Haliaeetus albicilla ) is of importance.

It is also a haven for mammals such as otters ( Lutra lutra ), mink ( Mustela lutreola ), ermine ( Mustela erminea ) and wild boar ( Sus scrofa ).

The Potcoava Lake is home to some fish species such as crucian carp ( Carassius carassius ) and tench ( Tinca tinca ), but also rudd ( Scardinius erythrophthalmus ) and pike ( Esox lucius ) can be found here.
