Sakhalin-Zătoane is a protected area in nature and landscape protection of the IUCN category IV biotope and species protection area ( bird sanctuary ) in the Danube Delta biosphere reserve . It is located in the area of ​​the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe , in the district of Tulcea , in Romania .

In 2000, the Vătafu-Lunghule Reserv reserve was designated a nature reserve of national importance by law number 5 of March 6th . As part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, the reserve Sakhalin Zatoane part of the World Heritage of UNESCO .

The Sakhalin-Zătoane protection zone is located in the south of the Danube Delta, on the area of ​​the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe. With more than 214 square kilometers, it is the largest contiguous protection zone in the reserve.

Sakhalin-Zătoane was placed under nature protection for the first time in 1961 and designated as a biotope for species protection in 2000 and incorporated into the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The lakes and coasts of the reserve serve as gathering places for migratory birds during spring and autumn migration. Sakhalin Island is an important nesting, migratory and resting place for around 100 different species of birds, 14 of which nest here.

The Sakhalin-Zătoane Reserve is a bird sanctuary . It provides a suitable nesting place and food for numerous birds: the purple heron ( Ardea purpurea ), black heron ( Ardeola ralloides ), Dalmatian pelican ( Pelecanus crispus ), white pelican ( Pelecanus onocrotalus ), whooper swan ( Cygnus cygnus ), spoonbill ( Platalea leuaderis. ) And brown pelican ( Plegaderis falcinellus ).
