The Belciug Lake ( Romanian Lacul Belciug ) is a protected area in nature and landscape protection of IUCN Category IV biotope and species protection area ( water and bird sanctuary ) in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve National Park . It is located in the area of ​​the city of Sfântu Gheorghe , in the Tulcea district , in Romania .

Lake Belciug was designated a nature reserve of national importance by law number 5 of March 6, 2000 and court order number 2.151 of November 30, 2004 . As part of the National Park Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, he is part of the World Heritage of UNESCO .

The Belciug Lake has an area of ​​1.1 km² and a depth of seven meters. It is located south of the Sfântu Gheorghe arm, on the area of ​​the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe. Lake Belciug was placed under nature protection in 1994 and designated as a biotope for species protection in 2000.

Thanks to its isolated location and its great depth, it offers a suitable habitat for some endangered fish species such as crucian carp, tench and nerfling. The Belciug Lake Sanctuary is also an important nesting and feeding place for herons and ducks. The endangered crane has been sighted in the surrounding reed areas.

The reserve Belciug Lake haven for migrating birds food and a suitable breeding ground: Purple Heron ( Ardea purpurea ), Rallenreiher ( Ardeola ralloides ), Dalmatian Pelican ( Pelecanus crispus ) White Pelican ( Pelecanus onocrotalus ), whooper swan ( Cygnus cygnus ), spoonbill ( Platalea leucorodia ) and Crane ( Grus grus ).

The lake is important for the conservation of endangered fish species such as tench ( Tinca tinca ), crucian carp ( Carassius carassius ) and nerfling ( Leuciscus idus ). Also live carp ( Cyprinus carpio ), pike ( Esox lucius ), perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) and bream ( Abramis brama ).
