The Luino train station in the city of the same name is the border station between the Italian ( RFI ) and the Swiss rail network ( SBB ).

The station is located on the Oleggio – Pino line , which went into operation in 1882 and which runs further north via Cadenazzo as a feeder for the Gotthard Railway . Curiously, the station is about 16 km south of the border, because no space for a station area could be found in between.

The route between Luino and the border is operated by RFI, but with the Swiss technical rules, including the 15 kV alternating current overhead line. There are the Maccagno and Pino - Tronzano train stations ; Border controls took place on the trains until the introduction of the Schengen Agreement .

Luino station has four tracks for passenger traffic, of which only tracks 1 and 2 are normally used. Passenger traffic is covered by line S30 of the so-called " Ticino S-Bahn ", which runs every hour in the direction of Gallarate and every two hours in the direction of Bellinzona .

Freight traffic has increased since the late 1990s; the freight trains coming from the Gotthard Railway are often led via Luino to the Milan and Novara railway nodes in order to relieve the steeper Chiasso route . There are 7 freight and 5 sidings in the Luino station for this.

Luino also has a small railway museum , the Museo Ferroviario del Verbano , which is managed by the Verbano Express association. In the station building there is a collection of railway technical items, in the former locomotive shed there are several locomotives and wagons (including the 50 3673 of the DR ). Opening times are every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
