In 1995 the then Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg (ORB) developed a new entertainment format for its main evening program. This was then taken over by the public parent station Das Erste . Directed by Jochen Jänicke, the show was recorded regularly for eight years at Schloss Diedersdorf , an estate between Großbeeren and Blankenfelde-Mahlow in the state of Brandenburg .

The performers came from the popular music scene and German hit music. Over time there occurred u. a. Stefanie Hertel , Roland Neudert , Angela Wiedl , Mara Kayser , die Klostertaler , Edith Prock , the Hofmann siblings , Maria and Margot Hellwig and Dagmar Frederic .

The appearance of Hape Kerkeling as the travesty singer Helga with the Wildecker Herzbuben for his SAT.1 broadcast About Laughs the World caused a stir . The presenter Kusch-Lück was surprised "in front of the camera with a hidden camera, so to speak".

There were four CD collections in the musicians' barn, in which the current hits of the stars who performed there were presented. In 2001 there were media reports that the recording location, Schloss Diedersdorf, was threatened with extinction due to aircraft noise from the neighboring large Schönefeld airport. However, this did not have any serious effects on the broadcasting process.

In 2003 the ARD stopped the show. In the year 2000, around 5 million TV viewers regularly tuned in, but in the wake of the generally stagnating rate for music broadcasts, the number of devices turned on fell to around 3.5 million.

As a replacement for the show, the musician steamer of the newly founded rbb television , which went on air in the summer of 2003, was created. Petra Kusch-Lück , who was originally also supposed to be the presenter for this format, presented the musicians' barn as a live event on site until the end of December 2007 before she devoted herself to new projects.
