Music festival
Performances of large choral and orchestral works with an exceptionally reinforced choir and orchestra are referred to as music festivals on a larger scale ; apart from a few occasional arrangements for homage, etc., they do not go back beyond the 18th century .
The oldest music festivals are
- the " Sons of the Clergy Festival " in St Paul's Cathedral in London (since 1709)
- the " Three Choirs Festivals " in the English cities of Gloucester , Worcester and Hereford alternating every year (since at least 1719)
- the annual performances of Handel's "Messiah" in London (since 1749)
- the music festivals in Birmingham (since 1768, almost every three years)
- the Handel festivals at Westminster Abbey (1784, 1785, 1786, 1787 and 1791)
- the music festivals in York (since 1791 every year until 1802 and then again since 1823)
- the music festivals of the Tonkünstlersocietät in Vienna (twice every year since 1772)
- the Thuringian music festivals in Frankenhausen in 1810 (Spohr) and in Erfurt in 1811
- the Lower Rhine music festivals (since 1817, initially alternating between Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ) and Düsseldorf , until 1821 Cologne and 1825 Aachen joined the cycle, while Elberfeld left in 1827)
The music festivals in Birmingham , Leeds , Liverpool and Bristol (every three years), the Handel festivals of the Sacred Harmonic Society in London's Crystal Palace (every three years since 1859), the Tonkünstler meetings of the "Allgemeine Deutsche Musikverein", the Silesian music festivals are of more recent origin (since 1876) and from 1984 the WDR music festival as a follow -up event to the Niederrheinische Musikfest etc.
The Bonn International Beethoven Festival has taken place every year in September and October since 1998 .
