The Mutti ( 2980 m slm ) is a striking ridge tower in the south ridge of the southern fork tip ( 3071 m above sea level ), a summit in the west of the Venediger group . In contrast to the southern fork tip, a border summit between East and South Tyrol , the mother is entirely in South Tyrol. It was not until 2011 that the first ascent of this ridge tower was made, which was given the name "Mutti" by the first climbers. Because of the benches placed in the summit area and the view over the Knutten valley, the lookout point is also known as the “Knutten cinema”.
Location and surroundings
At the southern fork tip , another short ridge branches off from the border ridge , which runs from this summit to the Großer Reinhard and initially in a south-easterly direction, whose end point is the Kleine Rheinhard ( 2661 m ). In this ridge, which is completely protected in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, a striking ridge tower rises up at a distance of almost 500 meters, the Mutti.
The mother is almost exactly in line with the Knuttental valley, which runs to the southwest, a spring valley of the Reintal valley that continues in the same direction . Not least because of this, the mother offers a comprehensive view of a large part of the mountains of the Ahrntal and its side valleys.
Alpinism
An attempt at ascent in the 1970s was canceled because of the fragile rock in this area. On August 20, 2011, Markus Neumair, Lukas Forer and Michael Wolfsgruber from Sand in Taufers found a route from the Brunnerhütte over the rugged flank to the north ridge of the ridge tower. Over the ridge in more solid rock, immediately avoiding a few spikes in the flanks, they reached the summit with a climb of difficulty 5.
In the following year, some loose scree was removed from the route and the most difficult places were defused with wire ropes and stepping pins so that less experienced mountaineers can also reach the summit. In addition to passages similar to via ferrata, this route has sections without climbing aids that contain climbing difficulties up to UIAA II .
Instead of a summit cross, a metal flag was placed at the highest point, inspired by the "EU Barcode" project by Dutch artists Rem Koolhaas and Reinier de Graaf - the colors of all flags of the EU member states are combined and the arrangement is similar to a barcode. The colored stripes of the flag on Mutti's peak are all rotatable independently of each other.
Furthermore, two metal benches were placed one behind the other on the summit plateau, which slopes slightly to the southwest - i.e. in the direction of the Knuttental. Not least because this arrangement is reminiscent of a movie theater, the viewpoint is also called "Knuttenkino" surely inspired by the as " Knottnkino known" vantage point on the Red Steinkogel at Verano .
