background

In the mid-2000s, Freddy Cole added guitarist Randy Napoleon to his accompanying quartet , first heard on the live recording The Dreamer in Me - Live at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola (2008). Other musicians included saxophonist Joel Frahm , pianist John Di Martino , bassist Elias Bailey and drummer Quentin Baxter (who had replaced Curtis Boyd ).

On his last album, in addition to the title track by Carl Sigman, Cole interpreted a program of pop and jazz standards such as "Love Like This Can't Last" by Billy Strayhorn , "Temptation" by Nacio Herb Brown , "I'll Always Leave The Door a Little Open ”by Richard Rodney Bennett and Johnny Mandel ,“ Almost in Love ”by Luiz Bonfá and Randy Starr and“ They Didn't Believe Me ”by Jerome David Kern . Connected to the repertoire of his brother Nat King Cole was the song "My Heart Tells Me (Should I Believe My Heart)" by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren , as well as "The Lonely One", which his brother had interpreted on his album After Midnight . The album closes with Randy Newman's "Marie" (from his album Good Old Boys , 1974).

reception

Christopher Loudon wrote in JazzTimes that Cole was digging deep into his extensive songbook to discover some underrated gems. There is still a hint of Nat Cole in Freddy's polished baritone, but the decisive parallel is the equally fascinating mastery of storytelling, as shown in Luiz Bonfá's shyly performed “Almost in Love”. He's also presenting a sparkling, Joel Frahm-powered version of Billy Strayhorn's "Love Like This Can't Last"; Richard Rodney Bennett and Johnny Mandel's bittersweet “I'll Always Leave The Door a Little Open,” Mack Gordon and Harry Warren's romantically perplexed Nat Cole-associated “My Heart Tells Me”; and the delicate title track by Carl Sigman.

According to George W. Harris, who reviewed the album in Jazz Weekly, Cole was digging up obscure songs like “I'll Always Leave the Door a Little Open” or “First Began” and giving them grooves that were hip and moody one wonders why one has never heard that before. The mixture of Cole's relaxed voice with Frahm's tenor creates smoky moods on the title track and the beautiful Billy Strayhorn melody "Love Like This Can't Last", which seems like an embodiment of his " Lush Life ". Cole's singing is a real joy, the author sums up. The album was nominated for the 2019 Grammy Awards in the Best Vocal Album category.
