The Mytilus is a research ship of the Spanish research institute Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).

history

The ship was built under the hull number C-10 at the Astilleros Armada shipyard in Vigo . Construction began in January 1996. The launch and christening of the ship took place on January 26, 1997. Godmother was Esperanza Aguirre y Gil de Biedna , then Minister for Education and Science. The ship entered service in April 1997. It was financed by the Government of the Autonomous Region of Galicia , the CSIC and the European Union. The ship was designed by the Cintranaval Vigo architectural firm.

The ship is stationed in Vigo. It is used by the Instituto de Investigacións Mariñas, located here, but is also available to universities and other research institutions for oceanographic, biological and geological research in the coastal area. It is named after the genus of mussels .

During the Expo 98 in Lisbon , the ship was temporarily used as a floating exhibition space.

In November 2000 the ship was lengthened by four meters at the shipyard. In November 2002 the drive motors were replaced.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by two Volvo Penta - Diesel engines driven. It was first with two diesel engines of the type TAMD 71-B, each with 220  hp power provided. In November 2002 these were replaced by two TAMD-103-A diesel engines, each with an output of 287  kW . The motors act on two fixed propellers via reduction gears . A Leroy Somer generator (43  kVA apparent power) driven by a Perkins diesel engine (46.5 hp ) and a Piller generator (60 kVA apparent power) driven by a Deutz diesel engine (53 kW power) are available for generating electricity Available.

The ship is equipped with echo sounder and sonar as well as various other devices for measurements in the water, on the sea floor and in the atmosphere. A rear boom and a folding boom as well as a telescopic hydraulic crane are available as lifting tools . The boom is used to deploy and retrieve a CTD rosette and other research equipment. The working deck is 7.43 × 4.7 meters in size, so that 35 m² are available here. It can be loaded with 2 t. There are three laboratories on board.

The ship is operated by a six-person crew for whom three double cabins are available. Another three double cabins and one four-bed cabin are available for scientific staff. On day trips, 25 people including the crew can be on board.
