The Northern Ferghana Canal ( Uzbek Shimoliy Fargʻona kanali ) is an irrigation canal in the Ferghana Valley in Central Asia . The canal is 162.5 km long and flows through Uzbekistan and Tajikistan .

history

The Northern Ferghana Canal was built in 1940-1941 after the Great Ferghana Canal together with the Southern Ferghana Canal . As a result of these canal construction, the irrigated area increased significantly and the cotton harvest doubled.

course

The Northern Ferghana Canal is diverted to the right out of the Naryn at Uchqoʻrgʻon and runs essentially to the west. It flows between Chortoq and Uychi and crosses Namangan . In its further course through the province of Namangan it passes the Rezaksay reservoir in the south and flows through Pop . Then it crosses the border to Tajikistan, where it flows into the Syr Darya from the right .

Of the 162.5 km of the canal, 144 km run through Namangan Province in Uzbekistan and 18.5 km through Sughd Province in Tajikistan.

The Northern Ferghanakanal is for irrigation in agriculture use, especially for the cultivation of cotton . The irrigated area is about 1175 km², of which about 715 km² in Uzbekistan and about 460 km² in Tajikistan.
