The northern man's shield ( Androsace septentrionalis ), also known as the Nordic man's shield , man's armor or man's shield , is a species of plant in the primrose family (Primulaceae). It is very rare in Central Europe .

description

The northern man's shield grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 15 (rarely up to 30) cm. The inflorescence stem and the flower stalks are densely hairy, star-haired and downy. The leaves have mainly forked and simple hairs, on the surfaces they can also be completely bald. The whole plant is also covered with short, reddish stem glands. The leaves sit in a basal rosette , are lanceolate, sessile or contracted into the winged petiole. They are pointy and toothed.

The inflorescence shafts arise individually or mostly in groups from the axils of the upper leaves. The umbellate inflorescence is many-flowered and dense. The flower stalks are erect and three to six times longer than the bracts. The calyx is about 3 mm long, bell-shaped and divided up to a third. The crown is white or reddish with a yellow throat, about 4 to 5 mm long and towers above the calyx. It blooms in May and June.

The capsule is spherical, slightly longer than the calyx and contains about 5 to 10 long-edged, slightly warty seeds when the fruit is ripe .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.
