Nairn ( Gaelic : Inbhir Nàrann ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located on the south bank of the Moray Firth about 26 km east-northeast of Inverness and 35 km west of Elgin . In 2011 Nairn had 9,773 inhabitants.

history

The symbol stone of Glenferness located in the south indicates a Pictish settlement in the 8th or 9th century.

Nairn grew around an old fishing village at the mouth of the River Nairn in the Moray Firth. In the Victorian era , Nairn was a medicinal bath. Due to the wide sandy beaches and the favorable climate, Nairn is a popular holiday destination. Charlie Chaplin often spent his vacations in Nairn. Nairn is the administrative seat of the traditional county of Nairnshire , which was an administrative county until 1975 .

The beaches around Nairn and Forres are similar to those in Normandy . For this reason, exercises for landing the Allies in Normandy took place there from autumn 1943 . In order not to endanger the inhabitants, parts of the population were temporarily relocated. A memorial stone has been placed on the beach to commemorate these events.

Between 1896 and 1927 Nairn was the location of the nationally important whiskey distillery Glencawdor . However, the distillery was given up.

Culture

The promoter Ken Ramage (1935–2011) founded the Nairn Jazz Festival in the 1980s, where international artists such as Ruby Braff , Gene Harris , Dick Hyman and Houston Person performed.

traffic

The A96 , which connects Inverness with Aberdeen , crosses the city and connects it to the trunk road network. Nairn has had a train station since 1855. Today it is regularly served by First ScotRail on the Aberdeen to Inverness Line .
