Naldrettite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the chemical composition Pd 2 Sb (chemical palladium antimonide , a compound of palladium (Pd) and antimony (Sb)) and forms anhedral grains of up to 240 μm in size and with a creamy-white color.

Etymology and history

The mineral was found in 2005 by LJ Cabri, AM McDonald, CJ Stanley, NS Rudashevsky, G. Poirier, BR Durham, JE Mungall and VN Rudashevsky in its Mesamax type locality on the Ungava Peninsula in the Canadian province of Québec . The mineral was named after Anthony J. Naldrett, former president of the International Mineralogical Association (1998-2002).

classification

In the Strunz system , naldrettite is one of the alloys and alloy-like compounds, a subgroup of sulfides and sulfosalts. After the 8th edition , it forms a group of metals, alloys and intermetallic compounds, which belong to the mineral class of elements, together with Cabriit , Paolovite , Taimyrite and Tatyanait . In the 9th Edition it forms with Majakit , Palladoarsenid , Palladobismutoarsenid , Palladodymit and Rhodarsenid a subgroup of the compounds of semimetals with platinum group elements (PGE), which are classified in the sulphides and thio-salts.

In the systematics according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , it forms its own subgroup of sulfides, selenides and tellurides with the composition A m B n X p , with (m + n): p = 2: 1.

Education and Locations

Naldrettit is associated with pyrrhotite , pentlandite , chalcopyrite , galena , sphalerite , cobaltite , clinochlor , magnetite , sudburyite , electrum and altaite .

Finds of the very rarely occurring mineral are known so far only from the type locality Mesamax .

Crystal structure

Naldrettite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system in the space group Cmc 2 1 (space group no. 36) with the lattice parameters a = 3.3906  Å , b = 17.5551 Å and c = 6.957 Å as well as eight formula units per unit cell .
