Mayakite is a very rarely occurring mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition PdNiAs and forms round or oval inclusions up to 100 μm in polarite or adhesions with stannopalladinite and isomerite of gray-white color.

Etymology and history

The mineral was discovered in 1976 by AD Genkin, TL Evstigneeva, NV Troneva and LN Vyal'sov in its type locality , the Mayak mine near Norilsk in Russia , and named after this.

classification

In the Strunz system , mayakite is one of the alloys and alloy-like compounds, a subgroup of sulfides and sulfosalts. After the 8th edition , it forms together with Arsenopalladinit , Atheneit , Genkinit , Itoigawait , Menshikovit , Mertieit-I , Mertieit-II , Palladoarsenid , Palladobismutoarsenid , Palladodymit , Polkanovit , Rhodarsenid , stibiopalladinite , Stillwaterit , Ungavait and Vincentit a group. In the 9th edition , it forms a subgroup of compounds of semimetals with platinum group elements (PGE) with naldrettite , pallado arsenide, palladobismuth arsenide, palladodymite and rhod arsenide .

In the systematics according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , it forms with menshikovite a subgroup of sulfides, selenides and tellurides with the composition A m B n X p , with (m + n): p = 2: 1.

Education and Locations

Mayakite forms as an intergrowth with other platinum group minerals in chalcopyrite or talnakhite ores or through sulfide mineralization in metamorphosed intrusions . It is associated with chalcopyrite, talnakhite, polarite, stanopalladinite , silver , ferroplatinum , sperrylite and other platinum group minerals, or in another location with isomertieite and mertieite-II .

Only a few locations are known of the very rare mineral. In addition to its type locality, mayakite was found in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario , Lapland ( Finland ), Montschegorsk , Lake Baikal and other sites in Russia .

Crystal structure

Mayakite crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with the lattice parameters a = 6.066  Å and c = 7.20 Å as well as six formula units per unit cell .
