Polarite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the chemical composition Pd 2 PbBi and forms up to 0.3 mm large grains of white color with a yellowish tinge.
Etymology and history
The mineral was found in 1969 by AD Genkin, TL Yevstigneyeva, NW Troneva, and LN Vyalsov in the type locality , the Mayak mine near Norilsk in Russia . The mineral is named after the Polar Urals , the northernmost mountain range of the Urals , in which the type locality is located.
classification
In the Strunz system , polarite is counted among the sulfides and sulfosalts. According to the 8th edition , together with Breithauptite , Cherepanovite , Freboldite , Hexatestibiopanickelite , Kotulskite , Nickelin , Langisite , Ruthenarsenit , Sederholmit , Sobolevskit , Sorosit , Stumpflit and Sudburyit form a subgroup of sulphides with a ratio of metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium of 1: 1. In the 9th edition it forms its own subgroup of compounds of semimetals with platinum group elements (PGE).
In the Dana system , it forms its own subgroup of sulfides, selenides and tellurides with the composition A m B n X p , with (m + n): p = 1: 1.
Education and Locations
Polarite forms under hydrothermal conditions in copper - nickel - iron veins. It is associated with chalcopyrite , talnakhite , cubanite , stannopalladinite , paolovite , sobolevskite , sperrylite , cabriite , palarstanide , sphalerite and silver .
Only a few sites are known of the very rare mineral. In addition to the type locality, polarite was found in Longhua in the Chinese province of Hebei , on Lake Onega in Russia and in Goodnews Bay in the US state of Alaska .
Crystal structure
Polarite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system in the space group Ccm2 1 or with the lattice parameters a = 7.191 Å , b = 8.693 Å and c = 10.681 Å as well as 16 formula units per unit cell .
