Arsenopalladinite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with the chemical composition Pd 8 (As, Sb) 3 and forms round, up to 1.8 mm large grains of white color.

Etymology and history

The mineral was discovered in 1974 by AM Clark, AJ Criddle and EE Fejer in its type locality Itabira in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . They named the new mineral after the elements arsenic and palladium it contained .

classification

In Strunz's system , arsenopalladinite is one of the alloys and alloy-like compounds, a subgroup of sulfides and sulfosalts. After the 8th edition , it forms a group with athenite , genenkinite , itoigawait , mayakite , menshikovite , mertieit-I , mertieit-II , pallado arsenide , palladobismuto arsenide , palladodymite , polkanovite , rhodarsenide , stibiopalladinite , stillwaterite , ungavaite and vincentite . In the 9th edition it forms with Mertieit-II, Palarstanid and Stillwaterit a subgroup of the compounds of semimetals with platinum group elements (PGE).

In the Dana system , arsenopalladinite forms its own subgroup of sulfides, selenides and tellurides with different formulas.

Education and Locations

Arsenopalladinite forms in gold concentrates. Depending on where it was found it is associated with hematite , athenite, stillwaterite, palladite , isomerite and quartz ; Gold , palladium and Palladesit or Stillwaterit, Braggit , Vysotaskit , sperrylite and Hollingworthit .

Only a few locations are known of the very rare mineral. In addition to its type locality, arsenopalladinite was found in Midu in the Chinese province of Yunnan , Lapland ( Finland ), Teshio in Japan , Porsanger in Norway , Norilsk and Montschegorsk in Russia , the Bushveld complex in South Africa and the Stillwater complex in the US state of Montana .

Crystal structure

Arsenopalladinite crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system in the space group P 1 or P 1 (space group no. 1 or 2) with the lattice parameters a = 7.43  Å , b = 13.95 Å and c = 7.35 Å; α = 92.9 °, β = 119.5 ° and γ = 87.8 ° as well as six formula units per unit cell .
