Menshikovite is a very rarely occurring mineral from the mineral class of " sulfides and sulfosalts " with the chemical composition Pd 3 Ni 2 As 3 and is therefore a palladium - nickel - arsenide from a chemical point of view .

Menshikovite crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system , but has so far only been found in the form of irregular grains about 0.2 millimeters in size and in adhesions with other minerals. The mineral is opaque and has a pink color with a slight grayish tinge in the reflected light microscope.

Etymology and history

Menshikovit was first discovered in 1993 in the Tschineiskoje iron-titanium-vanadium deposit (English Chineyskoye ) near Novaya Tschara in the Chita Oblast (Transbaikalia region) in eastern Siberia and described by Andrei Barkow, Robert F. Martin, Jakow Pachomowski, Nadeschda Tolstych and Alexander Kriwenko, who named the mineral after Yuri Pavlovich Menshikov (1934–2013) to honor his extensive work on the descriptions of new minerals.

The type material of the mineral was deposited in the Fersman Museum of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow .

classification

In the meantime outdated, but still in use 8th edition of the mineral classification by Strunz of Menshikovit to the department of "alloys and alloy-like compounds" belonged, where he together with Arsenopalladinit , Atheneit , Genkinit , Miessiit ( IMA 2006-013 ) Majakit , Mertieit- I , Mertieit-II , Palladoarsenid , Palladobismutoarsenid , Palladodymit , Polkanovite , Rhodarsenid , Stibiopalladinit , Stillwaterit , Ungavait and Vincentit the "Arsenopalladinit-Gruppe" with the system no. II / A.05 .

The 9th edition of Strunz's mineral systematics , which has been in effect since 2001 and is used by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), also classifies the menshikovite in the department of "alloys and alloy-like compounds". However, this division is further subdivided according to the predominant metals in the compound, so that the mineral can be found according to its composition in the sub-division "Alloys of semi-metals with platinum group elements (PGE)", where it is the only member of the unnamed group 2.AC.20c forms.

The systematics of minerals according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world, initially classifies the menshikovite in the general section of "sulfide minerals". Here it can be found together with mayakite in the unnamed group 04/02/2016 within the subsection “ Sulphides - including selenides and tellurides - with the composition A m B n X p , with (m + n): p = 2: 1 ”.

Education and Locations

At its type locality , the Tschineiskoje deposit in Transbaikalia, Menshikovite was found in the heavy metal concentrates of quartz-feldspar sandstones, which were metasomatically transformed and recrystallized. Chalcopyrite , cobaltite , paolovite , isomerite , maucherite and sperrylite were added here as accompanying minerals . Another well-known site in eastern Siberia is the Cu-Ni sulphide deposit Oktyabr'skoye (Oktyabr'sky, Oktyabr'skoe) near Talnach on the northeastern foothills of the Putorana Mountains .

In belonging to the Federal District Northwestern Federal Republic of Karelia is Menshikovit found in the deposit Vostok lake north Pjaosero , a mineralized ore lens of coarse-grained, completely reshaped Gabbronorit ( gabbro - Norit -Varietät with Klino- and Orthopyroxenen ) in plutonic Lukkulaisvaara massif. In addition to chalcopyrite, hessite , hollingworthite , kotulskite , merenskyite , michenerite , pentlandite and sobolevskite also appeared here as accompanying minerals . Other well-known sites in northwestern Russia are in the Murmansk Oblast , more precisely in the Fedorovo-Pansky-Massif and the Monche-Tundra .

Menshikovit is also known from the Black Label chromite deposit in the Kenora District and the Marathon PGM deposit in the Thunder Bay District in the Canadian province of Ontario, from the Sandsloot open-cast mine near Mokopane in the South African province of Limpopo and from the Stillwater complex of the same name Counties of Montana and West Nottingham Township in Chester County of Pennsylvania in the United States.
