occupation

Nanking is an American documentary released in 2007 . Directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman , who wrote the script with Elizabeth Bentley.

action

The film tells about the Nanking massacres , which began in December 1937 after the city was occupied by the Japanese. The occupiers murdered nearly 370,000 people and raped between 20,000 and 80,000 women. Some foreigners from the west stayed in Nanjing and tried, under the guidance of the German John Rabe , to protect the Chinese civilian population from further attacks by the Japanese soldiers . For this purpose they set up a so-called "International Security Zone".

The film combines documentary recordings from archives in Europe, the USA and Asia with the voices of well-known actors reading contemporary letters and other documents.

Reviews

James Greenberg wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on January 30, 2007 that the film was "must- see " and beautifully executed. It is just as much a " powerful historical document " as it is a warning for future generations.

Awards

The film won the Sundance Film Festival's Documentary Film Editing Award in 2007 and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the Documentary Film category.

backgrounds

The film was shot in China , Japan and the United States. It was shown at some film festivals in 2007 such as the Hong Kong International Film Festival in March and Cannes Film Market in May. On December 12, 2007, it was shown in selected cinemas in the United States, where it grossed around 22,000 US dollars .

The BBC reported on July 4, 2007 that it was doubtful that the film would be shown in Japan , where historians would consider the portrayal of the massacres to be exaggerated.
