The National Library of South Africa ( English National Library of South Africa , Afrikaans Nasionale Bibliotheek van Suid-Afrika , NLSA) with priority locations in Pretoria and Cape Town , the National Library of the Republic of South Africa . The central legal bases for the National Library are the National Library of South Africa Act 1998 ( Act No. 92 of 1998 ) and Legal Deposit Act, 1997 ( Act No. 54 of 1997 , deposit copy ). According to the National Library of South Africa Act, it is a public institution ( PE ) with its own legal entity . The National Library embodies the function of the chief administrator of the common national cultural heritage of South Africa and the national repository for published literature .

General

The library was founded in Cape Town in 1818. Due to the history of the country, two main locations have emerged, which are in Cape Town (former Cape Colony ) and Pretoria (former Transvaal ). It emerged from the merger of the former State Library in Pretoria and the South African Library in Cape Town. The National Library of South Africa Act ( section 2, subsection b ) provides for the possibility that further branch locations can be opened in other cities after a ministerial order published in the Law Gazette.

Digitized copies of the library holdings have now been made in four areas . This applies to the holdings of newspapers, exhibitions, special collections and the history of the national library.

The National Library is headed by Kepi Madumo, the successor to Rocky Ralebipi-Simela (2014–?), As National Librarian and CEO . A board , whose members are appointed by the Minister for Arts and Culture, acts as a control body .

Purpose and tasks

The following core functions apply to the National Library of South Africa in accordance with the statutory provisions ( section 4, National Library Act, No 92 of 1998 ):

  • Building a complete collection of published writings originating in or relating to South Africa,
  • Maintaining and expanding all other collections of published and unpublished documents with a focus on works that originate from or relate to southern Africa ,
  • Promotion of the maintenance and preservation of the national heritage in other libraries in South Africa,
  • Creation and updating of the national bibliographic tasks,
  • Promoting access to published literature,
  • Provision of reference and information services at national and international level,
  • to act as a national body for the preservation of libraries and to offer related preservation services,
  • Promotion of awareness and appreciation for the documentary significant literature of South Africa,
  • Promotion of information awareness as well as literacy .
