National Women's Soccer League 2014 / Expansion-Draft

The NWSL Expansion Draft for the 2014 season was carried out on January 10, 2014. Representatives of the Houston Dash franchise, which joined the NWSL for the 2014 season, were able to sign up to ten players from the previous eight NWSL teams in a conference call .

Starting position

This procedure should enable the Dash to set up a competitive team in the tight period up to the start of the season in April 2014. Up to the time of the draft, Whitney Engen , Erin McLeod and Teresa Noyola were only three players in the line-up of the newly founded Dash. These were assigned to the franchise as part of Player Allocation 2014 , or acquired through a subsequent player swap in which McLeod came from the Chicago Red Stars in exchange for the originally assigned Melissa Tancredi .

process

The eight previous NWSL franchises were able to protect a certain contingent of female players from access by the Dash, a list of these female players was published two days before the expansion draft. The franchises had to observe the following rules:

The following rules applied to access through the Houston Dash:

  • Only up to two of the assigned US internationals were allowed to be signed in the entire draft, plus a maximum of one of the Canadian and Mexican internationals.
  • In general, a maximum of two players could be committed to the same franchise. If the selected player was one of the assigned US national team players, no further players could be signed by this franchise.
  • After each election of the Dash, the franchise concerned was allowed to protect any of the remaining players.
