from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Los Flamencos National Reserve ( Spanish Reserva nacional Los Flamencos ) is a group of nature reserves in the municipality of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. These are important landscapes and biotopes in the Atacama Desert , which are developed for sustainable tourism and at the same time are subject to nature conservation.

description

The Los Flamencos National Reserve is one of numerous nature reserves that belong to the national system of state-protected game areas (Spanish: Sistema Nacional de Áreas Silvestres Protegidas por el Estado ) in Chile and are managed by the forestry authority CONAF . The areas designated as national reserves are defined as areas in which it is necessary to conserve natural resources and use them with particular caution.

The reserve consists of seven independent and spatially separated zones with a total area of 709 km 2 , which make up 3% of the municipal area of San Pedro de Atacama. The local government is developing these areas into preferred tourist destinations in the municipality by investing in improvements to the tourist infrastructure. The protection zones include typical regional desert landscapes and wetlands with interesting flora and fauna. 112 different species of birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals have been counted in the reserve . Notable among them are the flamingos ( Andean flamingo , James flamingo , Chileflamingo ), after which it is named. Well visible, they are the main attraction of the national reserve, which is visited by tens of thousands of tourists every year.
