The Kirchhagen old wood reserve, with a size of 19.6 hectares, was located between Eslohe and Bundesstraße 55 and Haus Wenne . On January 30, 1980, was made Provisional ensuring the conservation area waste wood inventory Kirchhagen for four years. The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) on March 1, 1985 by the Arnsberg district government . In 2008, the area was designated as part of the Eslohe landscape protection area with the Eslohe landscape plan by the Hochsauerlandkreis . In the north-west the NSG bordered directly on the development of Eslohe. In the north and east it bordered directly on the B 55.

Area description and gray heron colony

The area is a beech population at Kirchhagen , also known as Wenner Stich . The NSG is located on a steep slope right up to the B 55. In the area, gray herons have been breeding in a colony since at least the 1950s. At that time this colony was the only one in the whole of the Sauerland . It is also the oldest known gray heron colony in the Sauerland. The colony is also mentioned in 1965 without the number of clumps. In 1968, 26 breeding pairs were counted. In the 1970s, this colony with 40 to 60 breeding pairs was the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Gray herons were still breeding there in 2014. It was the last colony in North Rhine-Westphalia where gray herons breed in beeches. Red kite and black kite breeding also occurred in the area .

In the NSG, at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, the owner Freiherr von Weichs felled all the old beech trees near the street. The reason given was the duty to maintain safety . The area was purchased in 2006 by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The state of North Rhine-Westphalia was entered as the owner in the land register, and the Ministry of the Environment was also registered . The reason for the purchase was species protection for the gray heron colony.

NSG designation and protective purpose of the NSG

The provisional securing of the old wood reserve Kirchhagen for four years took place in 1980 "to safeguard the diversity, uniqueness and beauty of this landscape: Near-natural deciduous forest on a steep slope as well as to preserve the habitats of certain animals: breeding area of the gray heron, one according to the Red List of North Rhine-Westphalia Westphalia is a highly endangered species of bird in its existence. ”In addition to the normal prohibitions in nature reserves, the temporary seizure included“ the felling of eyrie trees; the implementation of forestry work between February 1st and June 30th of each year. "

The permanent NSG designation took place in 1985 “to preserve and promote the communities of the near-natural deciduous forest communities and especially the supra-regionally important gray heron colony; Because of the rarity and outstanding beauty of this area: near-natural beech stock in a landscape characterized by spruce cultures. "In addition to the normal prohibitions in nature reserves, the designation listed" the hunting of gray herons, the felling of eyrie trees of the gray herons and forestry work between 1. February and June 30th. "

End of NSG status

In the design of the Eslohe landscape plan, the area was included as the NSG "Gray Heron Colony Kirchhagen Old Wood". In the final version of the Eslohe landscape plan, the NSG was missing and the area was added to the Eslohe landscape protection area . In a discussion in the Landscape Advisory Council in 2007, the Lower Landscape Authority had given as reasons that the breeding population of the gray heron in the colony had declined; the total number of gray herons in the Hochsauerlandkreis has increased and the district does not want to bear the costs of the traffic safety obligation. In the biotope register of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia , the area was until the beginning of 2015 as a nature reserve of old wood inventory in Kirchhagen . There was listed "Not least the high historical continuity of the forest, which is documented by the occurrence of species such as single berries , woodruff , multi-flowered Weisswurz and witch's herb and the long-standing gray heron colony are value-determining features for the NSG." The biotope register of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia demands for the area "Near-natural forest management" and "no clear cutting".

Story after the end of the NSG status

Total deforestation on Kirchhagen 2015, right Wennetal and Wenne house
Another area further north

In October 2014, a total deforestation was carried out by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the State Office for Forest and Wood North Rhine-Westphalia on a width of 10 m to 56 m along federal highway 55. All trees of whatever size were sawn. After the deforestation, the Association for Nature and Bird Conservation in the Hochsauerlandkreis submitted a petition about the total deforestation to Johannes Remmel, Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia and asked for an opinion.

In a letter dated May 27, 2016, received by the VNV on June 7, 2016, Mr. Kaiser from the Ministry of the Environment replied on behalf of Minister Johannes Remmel. The Ministry of the Environment wrote u. a .: "The case you referred to was discussed by me with the department of the state enterprise that manages the state forest in a separate appointment on the land owned by the state and the procedure for the measure you criticized was characterized as excessive and to be taken into account future cases requested. The Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW was instructed to carry out traffic safety in forest areas sensitively and to ensure that the stocks are only interfered with to the extent necessary by advising third parties. This was discussed in particular for areas that are significant in terms of nature conservation and the additional tests that may be necessary there (species protection / FFH) were dealt with. In the specific case, in the opinion of the MKULNV, there was no reason to treat the inventory in the form found. I assume that the appointments with the Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW on state-owned areas and in consultation with forest owners will lead to an appropriate handling of traffic safety in the future. I would like to thank you for your committed letter and your awareness of the problem. "
