The nature reserve Büchenberg and space mountain at Hesperinghausen with a size of 41.8  hectares located north of Hesperinghausen in the city of Diemelstadt in the district Waldeck-Frankenberg . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1993 administrative district Kassel because of its importance for botany. The NSG is identical to the FFH area Büchenberg and Platzberg near Hesperinghausen (DE-4519-301). The NSG consists of four sub-areas. In 1993 the area around the NSG was designated as the Büchenberg and Platzberg landscape protection area near Hesperinghausen with an area of ​​71.69 hectares. This LSG connects the four areas of the NSG. The LSG consists of two areas. The larger part of the LSG is in the Kallental on both sides of the L 3198.

In the north, the NSG borders directly on the state border between Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and the local road there . To the north of the western area behind the state border of North Rhine-Westphalia lies the Huxstein nature reserve .

Area description

The NSG is the local limestone lawn on the steep Zechstein slopes in the Diemeltal between Westheim (North Rhine-Westphalia), Hesperinghausen and Helmighausen . In the NSG there are also limestone debris heaps, limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation, limestone pioneer lawns, wet meadows and a limestone spring swamp.

The NSG is divided into five differently exposed areas. In places the grasslands in the NSG are bushed and spent. Since the 1980s, maintenance measures have been carried out by the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis . A sheep farm from Marsberg - Udorf has grazed the NSG since the 1990s.

From a plant sociological point of view, the lean lime lawn is a gentian pinnacle lawn. From a plant sociological point of view, the limestone grasslands in the area belong to the gentian pinnate grass lawns. Seven orchid species have been identified in the poor grassland. Mann's orchid and cowslips are visually distinctive in the NSG. Large populations of the nationwide endangered orchid species Tridentate Orchid and Fly Ragwort occur in the NSG. Occurrence of great summer root (Orobanche elatior) in the area.

Wildlife

68 butterfly species, including 35 butterfly species, were identified. 10 species of locust have been identified. Breeding bird species in the NSG are blackcatcher , tree pipit and red backed killer . The eagle owl and the gray woodpecker are food guests in the NSG.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated as a nature reserve because of its importance for botany. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
