The Enser See nature reserve is a 23  hectare nature reserve (NSG identifier SO-012K1) south of Niederense in the municipality of Ense in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1981 the Arnsberg district government designated the area as a NSG by ordinance. In 2006 it was again designated by the district council of the Soest district with the Wickede-Ense landscape plan. The NSG consists of two areas. The NSG borders directly on the district boundary in the west and south. In the urban area of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis , the Moosfelder Ohl nature reserve is directly adjacent . The Moosfelder Ohl nature reserve separates the two parts of the NSG from each other. A sub-area of ​​the NSG has been designated as the FFH area Weichholzaue Ense (identification DE-4513-304) with a size of 7 hectares since 2004 .

Area description

The NSG is the Enser See, the Möhne and the Möhneaue there. The NSG is a multifaceted wetland complex with the Möhne, Enser See, floodplain zones , reed beds and alluvial forests. The western part of the area is just a Möhne area with a bank. In the NSG breeding birds such as mute swan , Canada goose , mallard , coot , moorhen , Lesser Spotted Woodpecker , Middle Spotted Woodpecker , dippers , grasshopper warbler , willow warbler , garden warbler , Klappergrasmücke , blackcap , marsh warbler , willow tit and Zilpzalp .

Special rules for fishing and hunting

In the NSG there are special regulations for fishing and hunting due to its importance as a breeding, resting and wintering area for water birds. The practice of fishing is only allowed in certain areas and times.

In the NSG, only one company hunt per year is allowed from October 16 to December 31. Stalking roe deer, wild boar and red fox is prohibited from January 1st to June 30th, while roe deer, wild boar and red fox hunts are prohibited from January 1st to May 15th. Trapping and the training or testing of hunting dogs is prohibited in the NSG. Hunting waterfowl is prohibited in the core areas of the nature reserve. The mallard is exempt from the ban on water birds . The mallard can be hunted on a total of 6 evenings between October 15th and December 15th. Hunting mallard ducks in the NSG is prohibited all year round in the immediate vicinity of the Ruhr.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect Lake Enser and its immediate surroundings and parts of the Möhne from their inventory of species. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
