Nawaf Salam

Nawaf Salam (born  December 15, 1953 in Beirut ) is a Lebanese lawyer and diplomat . Between 2007 and 2017 he represented his home country as permanent representative to the United Nations in New York . He has been a judge at the International Court of Justice since 2018 .

Nawaf Salam was founded in 1953 in Beirut born and gained a diploma in 1974 at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences , and five years later at the University of Paris-Sorbonne the Promotion in Historical Sciences . He also holds a 1984 degree in law at the Lebanese University and in 1991 from the Harvard University a Master of Laws and a year later the political science doctorate at d'Institute Etudes Politiques de Paris .

Between 1984 and 2007 he worked as a resident attorney in his hometown, interrupted by three years of legal practice from 1989 to 1992 in Boston . The main focus of his work was international private law and international transactions . In addition, he was a lecturer or professor at the American University of Beirut from 1985 to 2007 , where he taught courses in international law , international relations and diplomacy , among other things .

From 2007 to 2017 he was ambassador and permanent representative of his home country to the United Nations in New York , including 2010/2011 as a representative in the UN Security Council during Lebanon's two-year membership as a non-permanent member. From September 2012 to September 2013 he served as Vice-President of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly . In addition, he headed the Lebanese delegations to various international meetings, including the 2009 UN climate conference in Copenhagen and 2015 at the UN climate conference in Paris .

On November 9, 2017, he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague . His regular nine-year term began when he was sworn in on February 6, 2018. This makes him the second Lebanese judge in the history of the court after Fouad Ammoun .

Nawaf Salam is married and has two children.
