Nazacara is a town in the La Paz department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Nazacara is the central place of the canton Nazacara in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Andrés de Machaca in the province of Ingavi . Nazacara is located at an altitude of 3830  m on the right bank of the Río Desaguadero , 65 kilometers downstream from Lake Titicaca . On the opposite east bank of the river is Nazacara de Pacajes , the central place of the Municipio Nazacara de Pacajes , the centers of the two places are less than a kilometer apart.

Nazacara lies between the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central in the Andean dry climate of the Altiplano with an average annual rainfall of around 500 mm (see Nazacara climate diagram). The region has a distinct daytime climate, with mean temperatures fluctuating more during the day than during the year.

The mean average temperature of the region is 9 ° C, the monthly mean temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly between 5 ° C in July and 10 ° C in December, the monthly precipitation is between under 10 mm from May to August and 100 to 125 mm in January and February .

Nazcara is 114 kilometers by road southwest of the capital of the department, La Paz .

From La Paz the paved road Ruta 2 leads west to El Alto , from there the Ruta 19 another 23 kilometers to the southwest to Viacha . Here the unpaved Ruta 43 branches off in a south-westerly direction and reaches Nazcara after 67 kilometers . The road then continues via Santiago de Machaca to Hito IV on the Peruvian border.
