Nederland is a small community in the US state of Colorado and is located about 65 kilometers northwest of Denver in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains . The cityscape is shaped by the Barker Reservoir at the entrance to the village when coming from Boulder.
Due to the bike path along the road between Boulder and Nederland, Nederland is a very popular destination for joggers, hikers and cyclists, but also skiers, as the place is only a few kilometers from the Eldora ski area.
history
The region around Nederland has seen many changes over its 150-year history. At the beginning of the 19th century, the area around Nederland was settled by Indians who lived here for generations. In the middle of the 19th century the first immigrants came to this region and gave the settlement various names such as Dayton , Brownsville or, from 1871, when the first post office opened, Middle Boulder . In the same year Abel Breed bought the silver mine on Caribou Hill , the silver of which was processed in Middle Boulder. Two years later he sold this mine to the Mining Company Nederland from the Netherlands. Middle Boulder was known among miners as "the Netherlands" ( Dutch : "Nederland"), which refers to the height of Caribou at 3,048 m. When the municipality was founded in 1874, the inhabitants chose "Nederland" as their name.
Two places in Nederland are registered by the National Park Service on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 26, 2018), the Cardinal Mill and the Rocky Mountain Mammoth Mine .
