Nelson Carrera

Nelson Carrera (born May 3, 1961 in Angola ) is a rock 'n' roll / rockabilly musician from Portugal .

Life

After his childhood in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola, after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the subsequent independence of the colonies, he moved with his family to France , where they from then on lived in Nogent-sur-Marne . As a teenager, he had already taken an interest in rock'n'roll at the age of 10 after his older brother introduced him to the music of Gene Vincent and Joe Clay . Carrera began collecting records from Eddie Cochran , Buddy Holly , Bill Haley , Elvis Presley , and many unknown musicians. When he arrived in France, he intensified his interest in R'n'R.

From 1978 he appeared publicly in France (including 1979 in the Paris Golf Drouot Club). From the early 1980s, Carrera began to write pieces of his own, exclusively in English. He lived in France for 25 years and was part of the local R´n´R / Rockabilly scene, as the head of various bands, such as the Winkle Pickers (1978-1980) and the Hooligans (January 1981 - March 1982). In 1983 he recorded his first record, an EP with four tracks, including the self-written Rock'n'Roll School . The EP was released on the Savas Iguane label, which u. a. which Gene Vincent published live in Switzerland- EP. With the support of the former Vince Taylor manager Jean 'Charles' Smaine, his international appearances increased, including in Germany and Switzerland, the Benelux countries, Scandinavia , and the United Kingdom .

In 1987 he appeared with a new band ( The Hornets ) and another EP, Modern Robin Hood , was released on the Carioca label. Two pieces of it appeared under the name Alley Cats , on a Rock Frenzy - compilation album in 1989. In 1989-1990 he entered the Paris Bataclan on, Crazy Beat Club with King Pleasure and Biscuit Boys in Bad Säckingen , and in La Ferté-Macé with Malcolm Yelvington . After a last appearance with his Alley Cats in Spain, Carrera married and moved to the Portuguese seaside resort of Figueira da Foz in the summer of 1992 , where he became a father and took a job as an event technician at the Casino Figueira there .

In 1996 an article about Carrera was published in Rock Therapy Magazine by Carlos Diaz ( El Toro Records ), as well as in other music magazines such as French Thundersound , Norwegian Rock , Dutch Boppin Around , Italian Jamboree , and German Rockin´ 50s . After Carrera could not form a stable group with good musicians, he recorded an album in Paris in 2001, Everybody´s Rockin´ with Nelson Carrera , which he released on Smaines Tiger Records label. In 2004 he appeared again on the rockabilly scene for the first time, in Colmar , France, as headliner with his new backing band The Hot Rocks. The concert was released on DVD and CD, but without being sold commercially. A separate album with the Hot Rocks, Something to remember , was released on the Chupeta label in 2005.

In 2006 he performed at the first pure rockabilly festival in Portugal, the Great Shakin'Fever in Porto . In 2010 he released a new album, together with the Portuguese rockabilly band The Dixie Boys . It has been featured in the press, radio and television, including an appearance on the popular Praça da Alegria broadcast on the RTP's first channel , and a live appearance with the Dixie Boys on TVI . In 2013, the northern German label Tessy Records, in collaboration with the British label Rhythm Bomb Records, released the album Love is a trap, which was recorded partly in France and partly in Portugal. .

Carrera occasionally appears for charity events in his home town of Figueira da Foz, but also at international rockabilly events.

In 2014 Carrera moved back to France and formed a new band, the "Scoundrels". Due to the great success of the last CD, he can be found again at numerous festivals in France and neighboring countries. With the new formation he recorded a new EP "Doggone Blue" as a rockabilly trio without a drummer, which was released at the end of 2015 on Tessy Records. The end of 2016 followed as a quartet with an authentic rockabilly sound, the CD and 10 "LP Partners in Crime only with self-written songs.
