Nereo Odchimar

Nereo P. Odchimar (born October 16, 1940 in Bacuad, Surigao del Norte , Philippines ) is a Filipino clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Tandag . From 2009 to 2011 he was chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Life

Nereo Odchimar studied philosophy at the seminary in Palo , Leyte , and theology at the seminary in Makati City . He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1964 . From 1965 to 1977 he was a pastor in the Diocese of Surigao . He then studied canon law at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila (magna cum laude, 1982) and received his doctorate in this subject in 1983 (magna cum laude). He also completed a degree in Business Administration (MBA) at De La Salle University in Manila.

On October 18, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him second bishop of the Tandag diocese in the province of Surigao del Sur , Mindanao . The Archbishop of Manila , Jaime Lachica Cardinal Sin , ordained him episcopal on November 27th of the same year; Co- consecrators were his predecessor as Bishop of Tandag, Ireneo A. Amantillo CSsR , and the auxiliary bishop in Manila, Socrates Buenaventura Villegas .

In succession to Angel Lagdameo , he was elected chairman of the Philippine Bishops' Conference CBCP on July 11, 2009 .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on February 26, 2018.

Act

Nereo Odchimar became known for his social commitment and his activities against the massive environmental damage caused by international mining companies on Mindanao. He also fights against the Islamist organizations “ Moro Islamic Liberation Front ” and the terrorist organization “ Abu Sajaf ”.
