history

Parish church Sankt Josef in Neu-Ödernitz

Neu-Ödernitz was originally built as a housing estate for the workers of the wood, metal and wagon construction company Christoph & Unmack from Neuhof , the houses were built as wooden houses in panel construction. After the planned settlement was completed, there were 76 houses in Neu-Ödernitz with space for around 250 families. Due to the strong population growth, Neu-Ödernitz gradually developed into a larger district of the rural community Ödernitz and grew together with the city of Niesky and the community of Neu-Särichen. In 1919 the province of Silesia was divided and from then on Neu-Ödernitz belonged to the province of Lower Silesia .

In 1929 the communities Ödernitz (with Neu-Ödernitz), Neuhof and Neu-Särichen were incorporated into Niesky. With 2377 inhabitants, most of whom lived in Neu-Ödernitz, Ödernitz was the second largest of the four merging communities. In 1935 the Catholic parish church of St. Josef was built on the western edge of Neu-Ödernitz . In 1938 the provinces of Lower Silesia and Upper Silesia were reunited to form the Province of Silesia, which was dissolved again in 1941. After the end of the Second World War, Neu-Ödernitz fell under the Soviet occupation zone . On January 16, 1947, the town of Niesky and Neu-Ödernitz became part of the Weißwasser-Görlitz district , which was renamed the Niesky district the following year . Neu-Ödernitz was part of the GDR since 1949.

During the district reform on July 25, 1952, Neu-Ödernitz came to the Niesky district in the Dresden district . After reunification, this initially continued to exist as the Niesky district in the Free State of Saxony and was absorbed into the newly formed Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia District during the district reform in 1994 . Since its dissolution in August 2008, Neu-Ödernitz has belonged to the Görlitz district.
