Schwerin has been the main location for the Mecklenburg Army since the 17th century. About 1815 troops were the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division of the 10th Federal - Army Corps stationed in Schwerin. In 1837 the dukes of Ludwigslust returned to Schwerin and the expansion of Schwerin into a residential and garrison town began.

Several former military buildings were built in Schwerin for the Mecklenburg military :

The Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Field Artillery Regiment No. 60 was founded in 1899; the artillery was expanded and the old barracks were no longer sufficient. The building of the barracks had to precede the transformation. Construction officer Oscar Wutsdorff from the Prussian War Ministry was responsible for planning and building the new barracks on Artillery Hill from 1897 to 1900 . It consists of five buildings:

  • No. 19: The two-story officers' mess from 1900 in the historicizing neo-renaissance style ; after extensive renovation, today the seat of a company
  • No. 21: The four-storey historicizing , 19-axis, plastered New Barracks (also quarter house ) from around 1900 with three short front wings; Today renovated and the seat of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information
  • No. 29: The three-storey, plastered, 10-axis, former residential building for NCOs (staff residence) from 1899 in the neo-renaissance style according to plans by Oscar Wutsdorff, with the six-storey gable risalit as a display facade and distinctive risalits on both side facades as well as accented corners and window frames; Until 2002/04 renovation and a new 2 and 3-storey building at the rear according to plans by bbl-mv , Schwerin, for the officers' building from 1899
  • No. 31: The three-storey clinkered, partly plastered barracks from around 1900 with the striking roof house with its lunette gable; today renovated and a branch of the Schwerin tax office
  • No. 33: Apartments for the barracks

The facility was used for military purposes until 1989, initially by the Grand Ducal Military, from 1919 in the Weimar Republic by the Artillery Regiment 2, around 1939 by the Artillery Regiment 12 and from 1945 by the Red Army of the Soviet Union and then by the National People's Army of the GDR .

Architectural style

The barracks in the style of the historicizing and romanticizing neo-renaissance refer to the buildings of the 16th century, including the Johann-Albrecht-Style , a special form of the Mecklenburg- Renaissance architecture named after Duke Johann Albrecht I.

The buildings are mostly plastered with concise brick structures. Design elements are the risalits, some of the coupled round and stichbogigen window, the stepped Lünettengiebel with characteristic terracotta jewelery and set small round pillars with cushion capitals . The central gable of the quarter house has a regional equestrian representation from the Schwerin city arms. By combining the various elements, a barracks building was created that has both supra-regional and regional architectural references.

Application for world heritage

The lines of sight between the barracks, the castle and the old garden were essential for the selection of the barracks construction site. With their façades, they form the background for the palace garden. The barracks are therefore 2020 with the Schwerin Castle part of the World Heritage application of the city as a residence ensemble Schwerin - cultural landscape of the romantic historicism and is on the list of the Federal Republic of Germany to apply as a World Heritage Site of UNESCO .
