Neus Català i Pallejà (born on October 6, 1915 in Els Guiamets , Tarragona province ; died on April 13, 2019 there ) was a member of the Partido Socialista Unificado de Cataluña (PSUC for short) during the Spanish Civil War and the last Spanish survivor of the concentration camp Ravensbrück .

Life

Neus Català came from a farming family in the Comarca Priorat . She was a member of the communist youth movement. In 1937 she completed her training as a nurse , moved to Barcelona and worked in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. In 1939 she crossed the French border with 180 orphans from Premià de Dalt , the children of Negrin .

Together with her husband Albert Roger, she took part in activities of the French resistance , organized intelligence services , arms deliveries and the documentation of Nazi crimes. She also took care of shelter for political refugees. She was denounced by a pharmacist from Sarlat-la-Canéda , arrested together with her husband in 1943, imprisoned and mistreated in Limoges , deported to Ravensbrück in February 1944 and then to Holleischen , subcamp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp . There she had to do forced labor in the armaments industry and was part of the Comando de las gandulas , a group of women who boycotted the manufacture of ammunition, produced around 10 million damaged loads and repeatedly brought the ammunition factory to a standstill through sabotage. Her first husband was murdered in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp .

Neus Català was able to survive the Nazi regime, returned to France, remarried and continued her resistance against the Franco regime . She lived in Sarcelles near Paris and was chairwoman of the Association of Victims of the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp. She was a member of the Partit dels i les Comunistes de Catalunya (PCC), the Esquerra Unida i Alternativa (EUiA) and an honorary member of the Fundació Pere Ardiaca .
