In its purity of style, the Neustadt Church of St. Katharina in Eschwege is one of the last successors to the Gothic Elisabeth Church in Marburg , which was consecrated in 1285 . The church in Eschwege is a three-aisled, late Gothic hall church , supported by eight slender round supports with four services each below and the foliage capitals above . You can see net, star and cross vaults.

The first documentary mention of the Eschweger district "Neustadt" was in 1306 as an indirect mention of a building in the "Old Town". When the churches in the town of Eschwege were reorganized in 1340, the St. Katharinenkirche as the chapel of the Neustadt district and the St. Godehard chapel (later Nikolaikirche, today the remainder of this church still the Nikolaiturm) were declared independent parishes. The chapel, the parish church of Neustadt since 1340, was the predecessor of the current church.

During construction work on a new heating system in 1998 , remains of the foundation walls of this previous church were found under the choir. It was almost as long as today's church, only a little narrower.

As the western end of this older church, the older (lower) part of the 75 meter high tower, which has been preserved to this day, was added from 1374 (inscription). It reached roughly the height of the clock face of the tower clock. According to an inscription from 1436 , construction began on the sacristy. The choir, which had been started in 1474, was completed in 1480 .

The nave was built between 1484 and 1492 , the vaulting was completed in 1520 , as the year on the keystone shows. By the time of the Reformation , the church had largely achieved the shape that is still recognizable today. After the Reformation was introduced in Hesse in 1527 , the church became a Protestant parish church .

On an old vault stone, which is exhibited in the vestibule of the church, there is a representation of Catherine of Alexandria, the namesake of the Neustadt church.
