The New Flame was a Panamanian bulk carrier that collided on August 12, 2007 in the Strait of Gibraltar with the tanker Torm Gertrud sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands and later sank. The accident is cited in specialist publications as an example in relation to the collision prevention rules .

history

The Handymax bulk carrier with an aft deckhouse and four cranes was built in 1994 as hull number 1073 at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Heavy Machinery Company in Okpo as Skaustrand for the Norwegian shipping company Skaugen. In 1995 Skaugen sold the ship for around 26 million US dollars to the Indian company Century Textiles & Industries, which renamed the ship Aditya Gautam and had it managed by Century Shipping. Ten years later, in October 2005, Gladiator Navigation from Piraeus acquired the ship, which then received its last name, New Flame .

Average at Europa Point

In August 2007 the New Flame was on a trip with a load of scrap from Newark to İskenderun . After a bunker stop , the ship left the port of Algeciras on the morning of August 12 and continued its journey to the destination port. The weather was relatively good with a westerly wind of strength 4 to 5 and good visibility. The New Flame initially drove a southerly course and increased its speed in the meantime in order to go east after passing the crossing traffic. The Torm Gertrud product tanker , built in 2002, was on a journey with 37,000 tons of gasoline from Augusta in Italy to Port Everglades . The Torm Gertrud was supposed to bring a crew member ashore in front of Algeciras and then continue his journey west. Both ships were equipped with modern navigation systems such as ARPA radar, AIS and GPS , and the Torm Gertrud also with ECDIS . Both bridges were manned by the captain and an officer on watch, and both ship's command saw the future enemy and knew the name of the other ship. According to the collision avoidance rules, the New Flame was the course holder and the Torm Gertrud had to evade at the beginning of the encounter . At 5:40 a.m., the captain of the Torm Gertrud left the bridge to do some office work. On the New Flame it was assumed that the Torm Gertrud would change her course significantly to starboard and head for the Bay of Algeciras. When it was noticed on the New Flame that this was not the case, the captain changed course to port. On the ARPA radar of Torm Gertrud , the target marking of the New Flame changed at 5:42 a.m. to a radar target passing nearby. The officer on watch on the bridge of the Torm Gertrud changed course slightly at 5:45 a.m. from 263 ° to 272 ° and then from 275 ° to 284 ° to starboard and, based on the information from his ARPA device, assumed that the New Flame would be with him a CPA of three cables in front of own ship. He further assumed that the New Flame had crossed his bow and was already looking at other ships. One minute before the two ships collided, said the New Flame , the Torm Gertrud on FM and informed her that she turn to port. The Torm Gertrud put her rudder hard to starboard and the bow of the tanker finally hit the New Flame at 5:49 a.m. about a nautical mile south-southwest of Europa Point, almost at right angles on her starboard side. On the New Flame , holds no. 1 and no. 2 and double bottom tanks no. 1 and no. 2 were hit, both of which filled up. The Torm Gertrud suffered damage in the forepeak and ballast tank No. 1S, but no cargo leaked. The ship was able to return to Algeciras for repairs on its own.

The Fotiy Krylov at the New Flame

The wreck of the New Flame lying aground with the forecastle was initially supposed to be removed by the tug and salvage shipping company Tsavliris using Lloyd's Open Form . The salvage tugs Fotiy Krylov and Megas Alexandros unloaded over 1000 cubic meters of various oils and other hazardous substances with other vehicles, with vehicles brought in by EMSA also working. In the following months, Tsavliris was supposed to separate the still buoyant aft ship, which failed due to the existing damage and the bad weather. The P&I insurance company then put the rescue out to tender again. In December 2007, the recovery company Titan Salvage was commissioned with the removal of the wreck that broke up in the course of the recovery. With the rescue tug Mistral and other smaller tugs, the floating crane Rambiz , a number of sea-going barges and other vehicles, Titan recovered a total of 50,900 tons of scrap load, wreckage and other components from December 2007 until the contract was completed in September 2009. Parts of the lifted wreck were scrapped in Ghent.

On January 25, 2008, the Spanish MP Willy Meyer bankrupt asked the European Parliament about the possible environmental damage caused by the recovery of the New Flame .

The official investigation report from Gibraltar found that both ships' command had disregarded the collision prevention rules.
