New Gold Dream , actually New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) , is the fifth studio album by the Scottish rock band Simple Minds .

history

With the album New Gold Dream , the band presented a completely new sound, which is very much influenced by producer Peter Walsh . The production was much more dense than on the previous albums and did not shy away from adding effects over and over again. Walsh also made use of overdubs , which were rather rare on the previous albums. The result was a very coherent, pop-oriented production.

This new path can also be seen in songwriting. The many experimental moments of previous songs were largely not continued. The songs are all designed for a wider audience. The band developed towards commercial success.

Three singles were released from the album: Promised you a Miracle , Glittering Prize and Someone Somewhere (in Summertime) .

classification

The album marks a turning point for the band in several ways. The touring stress of the onset of commercial success leads to the departure of drummer Brian McGee in 1981 , who is replaced on the album by Kenny Hyslop (on Promised You a Miracle ), Mike Olgetree and Mel Gaynor . Gaynor established himself as the band's new drummer during the following, commercially most successful phase. It is more concise that the band is now specifically recording singles instead of decoupling an album title afterwards. Author Simon Reynolds sees this as a final move away from prog and towards more commercial pop, and this is reflected in the single Promised you a Miracle . In 2012 the album was re-released in the X5 box set from Virgin Records with 6 bonus tracks.

reception

The trade journal Trouser Press attested to the band that it was “more than an interesting, pretentious formation with futuristic tendencies”. The Rolling Stone criticized "the same beat and the same musical ideas" while Melody Maker , the album celebrated "as a master's throw from the only group that is still relevant."

Simon Reynolds overwrites the chapter on New Pop in his book Rip it up and Start Again with the album title.
