Mel George Gaynor (born May 29, 1959 in Balham , London , England ) is a British drummer and is known as a member of the rock band Simple Minds .

biography

Gaynor joined the Simple Minds in 1982 as a studio musician while recording the album New Gold Dream . During the New Gold Dream Tour he became a permanent member of the band in late 1982, replacing Mike Ogletree. With a brief hiatus in the early 1990s, Mel Gaynor was the band's drummer until 2017.

Gaynor started playing the drums when he was eleven and had his first professional engagement at the age of 14. Musically he was influenced by The Rolling Stones , Led Zeppelin , Jimi Hendrix , James Brown and the Mahavishnu Orchestra . In addition to the drums, he is an active songwriter and producer.

In addition to the Simple Minds (1982–1992, 1997–2017), Mel Gaynor has already worked with musicians such as Elton John , Tina Turner , Samson , Associates , The Pretenders and Robert Palmer . As a further project he started a duo with the keyboardist Stephane Deriau-reine called The Fusion Project . The formation's first album was released in April 2006 and described as “a sort of mix between progressive rock and jazz fusion”.

In 2007 Mel Gaynor started his solo project with a new version of Play That Funky Music by Robert Parissi.

After 2017 he founded the band RISK (Mel Gaynor - Drums / Vocals, James Ford - Guitarist, Sarit Black - Bassist, Toby Baker - Keyboards / Backing Vokals, Melissa Gaynor [Mel's daughter] - Backing Vokals).
