New York Mini 10K

The New York Mini 10K is a people and street run over 10 km in New York City that takes place annually in early June. It has been organized by the New York Road Runners (NYRR) since 1972 and is the oldest women's run in the world.

history

In 1972 the race was launched as the first street run for women only by Fred Lebow , the founder of the New York City Marathon , and long-distance running pioneers Nina Kuscsik and Kathrine Switzer . First sponsor Johnson Wax had a women's marathon in mind, but Lebow convinced him that a shorter route would be more attractive (there were only three women in the New York City marathon last year). Based on the then fashionable mini skirt and the Johnson product Crazylegs , the event was named Crazylegs Mini Marathon. In the first event over a distance of 6 miles (9.656 km), 78 women started, an extraordinarily high number of participants for the time.

Since 1975 the current route length of 10 km has been started.

The start is on Central Park West Avenue . At 90th Street, turn into Central Park and follow West Park Drive to its north end. Then head south on East End Drive to the destination at Tavern on the Green.
