The unequal twin sisters Jane and Roxanne 'Roxy' Ryan happen to have the same goal: the exemplary model student Jane, who cares about the care of her sister and her father, wants to give a speech in New York in order to receive a scholarship at Oxford University ; her sister Roxy was of friends at a Simple Plan - video shoot invited in which they Sampler her own band zenRIOT wants to distribute, and they repeatedly truant and a representative of the school board gets to the neck. The two meet on the train to New York and are thrown out because Roxy cannot show a ticket and Jane cannot find hers in the confusion of her purse.
While getting out of the car, Jane runs into Jim, a bicycle courier who she runs into several times later. Out of desperation, Jane lets Roxy persuade Jane to ride in a limousine. Their driver turns out to be a criminal who wants to get a microchip that happened to get into Roxy's handbag. The two manage to escape, but Jane loses her notebook, which contains her money and her speech. The two freshen up in a strange hotel room and unexpectedly get help from Trey, the son of a senator. However, their dog eats the chip, which means they have a problem with the planned meeting with the criminal. Due to a mishap, they have to flee the hotel room in towels and walk across New York. They part ways when Jane tries to repeat her calendar and Roxy goes to the video shoot.
On the way they meet Jim and the chauffeur as well as Officer Lomax, who has been following Roxy for a while for truancy. The two sisters then meet again during the video shoot, where they can shake off their pursuers for the time being. Via the sewer they come close to Jane's destination, then more or less voluntarily undergo a styling and continue on their way.
Driven by an argument, Jane is kidnapped by the criminals and Roxy decides to hold the speech for her. She found the notebook by chance in the parked limousine and went to the university. However, on the way to the stage, she loses the speech and begins to give a speech that doesn't make sense. Meanwhile, Jane is able to free herself and, with the help of Jim, who appears again by chance, arrives at the university just in time to save the situation. Jane no longer gives her speech now that she realizes there are more important things than this scholarship, but the chairman of the jury offers her Oxford Place because he has found her notes and understands the real chaos of the day . This may also be due to the fact that he himself met the two of them several times and each time their meeting ended in him being showered with his hot coffee.
In the end, however, everything is fine. Jane gets together with Jim and Roxy with Trey. Jim changes schools for Jane and Roxy gets a record deal.
Reviews
"As with the first screen excursion Eins und eins makes four in 1995, the second movie by the twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen is a fast-paced comedy that is particularly noticeable with its harmlessness."

“Gordon already worked with producer Denise Di Novi on the US teen hit What Girls Want , and they make a good team. It's a shame that “A Crazy Day in New York” doesn't leave any room for a spark of creativity. Technical defects are another nuisance. As many microphones as are involuntarily seen in the entire film have not been "marveled at" for a long time. ... Despite the numerous shortcomings, Olsen fans will be happy about the twins' cinema debut. "
