Newberry Springs is a settlement in San Bernardino County in Southern California .

Newberry Springs is an unincorporated area 20 miles east of Barstow, San Bernardino County, California and west of the township of Baghdad, California . The settlement, which was created in 1911, has approx. 300 km 2 of land. It is 40 miles west of Mojave National Preserve and about 160 km south of Death Valley National Park at an altitude of about 610 meters above sea level.

Newberry Springs is an oasis with daytime temperatures averaging 42 ° C in summer. In winter, the lowest temperatures drop below freezing . The climate in the area of ​​the settlement is relatively mild and is used for growing pistachios , apricots and alfalfa . history

In the 1850s, Camp Cody, about 20 km north of Newberry Springs, was the terminus of Mojave Road, part of the ancient Mormon Trail to California. In the 1880s, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad filled water cars for the individual train stations and locomotives for the company in Newberry Springs.

Movie and TV

In 1987 the film Out of Rosenheim with Marianne Sägebrecht was filmed in Newberry Springs by director Percy Adlon in a former motel . The English title was Baghdad Café . Today (2016) only the café of the motel is standing. In later years the truck stop was used as a location for further films and TV recordings.

Attractions

Newberry Springs is the seat of the Coptic Monastery of Saint Anthony. The United States Department of the Interior maintains the Newberry Mountains Wilderness through its Bureau of Land Management .

The Newberry Springs Pistachio Festival takes place annually in November in Newberry Springs. Water-skiing and jet ski races are held on some artificial lakes.

In Newberry Springs is the now closed Lake Dolores Waterpark , the first water park in the United States.
