Newnham on Severn is a village and civil parish in west Gloucestershire , England. It is located in the Royal Forest of Dean , on the west bank of the Severn , about 15 km southwest of Gloucester and 5 km southeast of Cinderford . The place is on the A48 between Gloucester and Chepstow in Monmouthshire , Wales .
history
A parish church was founded in the 14th century , after a branch church had existed since at least 1018 , and a new church was built on the high bank in 1366 because the old structure was endangered by fluvial erosion. The new church itself was damaged by a gunpowder explosion during the English Civil War and a fire in 1881, but is still in use.
Because of the location of today's Newnham on the Severn, the Romans built three roads to where they built fords through the river. The Anglo-Saxons established a permanent settlement and the Normans built a mound castle to defend it . In the Middle Ages , Newnham became an important port , from where ships ply to other ports in Britain and the island . In 1171, Henry II started an invasion of Ireland here, in which contemporary reports say 400 ships and 500 soldiers were involved, which suggests the importance of the port. In any case, Newnham was the most important city west of the Severn. The city quickly lost its role as a port and trading post after the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal opened in 1827 .
In 1810 a first attempt was made to tunnel under the Severn , just south of Newnham , but the work was stopped in 1812 after a water inrush.
Eva Luckes , who would later become head nurse of the London Hospital, lived in Newnham.
The Gloucester to Newport Line runs into a tunnel here. The local train station was in operation from 1851 to 1964.

The Civil parish is part of the constituency of Newnham and Westbury, which begins in the north at Westbury-on-Severn and then the river to Newnham. This constituency had a total of 3,088 inhabitants in 2011.
