Nguyễn Văn Thiệu

Nguyễn Văn Thiệu [ ŋʷjə̌ˀn van tʰjə̂ˀw ] ( Hán Nôm : 阮文紹), (born April 5, 1923 in the province of Ninh Thuận ; † September 29, 2001 in Newton near Boston , USA) was a general of the ARVN and President of South Vietnam .

In 1965 there was a conflict between him and the then air force chief Nguyễn Cao Kỳ , who was Prime Minister of the country from 1965 to 1967 and who fought a bitter rivalry with Nguyễn Văn Thiệu until he retired from politics in 1971. On September 3, 1967, Thiệu was elected President of the Republic of Vietnam with 38% of the vote, and in 1971 he was re-elected. After the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty , which Thiệu rejected, he remained president for two years until he resigned on April 21, 1975 due to the imminent capture of Saigon by the communists and emigrated to Taiwan . He later lived in seclusion in Surrey ( Great Britain ) and most recently in Boston (USA), where he died in 2001.

Thiệu's visit to Bonn on April 10, 1973 led to a series of communist-organized demonstrations as part of the protests against the Vietnam War , during which, among other things, the Bonn town hall was occupied by 60 masked people.
