Nick Long Jr.

Nick Long Jr. (born August 14, 1904 (according to other sources 1907) in Greenlawn , Long Island , New York , † August 31, 1949 in New York City ) was an American dancer and actor on Broadway and in films.

During the silent era , Nick Long Jr. was used as a child actor in films. As a dancer he was mainly active in revue films, where he also played supporting roles. He was also a busy actor in music revues on Broadway and Off-Broadway. His most famous role in a movie was that of Basil Newcombe in Broadway Melody in 1936 .

Live and act

Nick Long Jr. was born to Nick Long Sr. and Idele Cotton, both parents were vaudeville and revue actors as well as theater actors. Nick's father starred in a silent film in 1925. Nick Long Jr. was already on stage at the age of nine, mostly in productions with his parents. He first appeared in front of the camera in 1915 at the age of 11. A few more films followed, which he shot as a child actor before he retired from the film business by the mid-1930s and initially continued to work as an actor for his parents. Independent representations followed from the 1920s, especially in musicals on Broadway and Off-Broadway.

On Broadway, he played with stars like José Ferrer , Bob Hope , Irene Dunne , Clifton Webb .

In the mid-1930s he played in three films, where he mostly took on supporting roles and played dance roles. From 1931 and again from 1934 he worked as an actor and dancer in London until 1939 , at the side of Danny Kaye , who was at the beginning of his career; so he danced in London and Manchester in Frederick Ashton's Autumn Leaves .

In 1939 he was drafted to take part in World War II, but released seven months later. In 1949, the unmarried Nick Long Jr. died in a car accident.

In the film Broadway Melody 1936 he took on the supporting role of Basil Newcombe, his most famous appearance in a movie. There he can be seen in some dance scenes that distinguish him as an excellent tap dancer, but also his idiosyncratic way of jumping and his sometimes dandy appearance show the whole class and the skills of the dancer to a wide audience. At the same time he played in this film with well-known stars like Jack Benny , Eleanor Powell , Robert Taylor , Una Merkel , Buddy Ebsen .
