Career

Club career

Nicolás Fuentes, born in 1941 in the Peruvian capital Lima, began his football career from 1961 to 1963 at the Atlético Chalaco club in Callao . With the two-time champions of the Andean country, the young defender also presented himself to the talent scouts of larger clubs. So it happened that in 1963 the Peruvian record champions Universitario de Deportes became aware of Fuentes.

As a result, Nicolás Fuentes played for Universitario de Deportes for eight years from 1964 to 1972 and experienced one of the most successful phases in the club's history. In these eight years Universitario, with which at that time players such as Héctor Chumpitaz , Luis Cruzado and Percy Rojas were under contract, succeeded in winning the Peruvian football championship five times. In 1964, 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1971 you were at the top of Peruvian football at the end of the season. However, the performances at the international level were less successful. Regularly qualified for the Copa Libertadores , however, the club never managed to get beyond the second group stage. It was only in Nicolás Fuentes' last year at Universitario de Deportes that the club was able to qualify for the final, where they met the Argentine representative Independiente Avellaneda , after taking first place in the second group stage, tied with Nacional Montevideo and Peñarol Montevideo , but with who had achieved better goal difference. However, after a goalless draw at the Estadio Nacional in Lima, the Uruguayan coach Roberto Scarone's team lost 2-1 in Avellaneda and lost the first ever Copa Libertadores final for a Peruvian team.

A little later, Nicolás Fuentes left Universitario de Deportes and joined Defensor Lima . This club, which has now slipped into the insignificance of lower-class Peruvian football, was definitely one of the top addresses in Peruvian football. Under coach Roque Máspoli , who was surprisingly world champion with Uruguay in 1950, Defensor Lima played its best season ever in 1973 and was able to earn the title of Peruvian football champion at the end of the season. Only ranked fourth after the regular season, the team improved in the final round and finished in first place with one point ahead of Sporting Cristal . By winning this title, Defensor Lima was also eligible to compete in the 1974 Copa Libertadores , where they finished the first group stage as group winners in front of CD El Nacional and Universidad Católica from Ecuador and league rival Sporting Cristal, thus qualifying for the second group stage, where they were bottom of the group the group two behind the FC São Paulo from Brazil and CD Los Millonarios from Colombia came to an end.

In 1974 Nicolás Fuentes changed employers again and went to Sporting Cristal for a year, where he ended his football career in 1975 at the age of 34.

National team

Between 1965 and 1970, Nicolás Fuentes made a total of seventeen appearances in the Peruvian national soccer team . A goal he did not succeed here. National coach Didi appointed him to the South American squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico . At the tournament, the defender acted as a regular and was used in all four games of the Peruvian team. This finished the group stage in second behind the Federal Republic of Germany and ahead of Bulgaria and Morocco . In the quarterfinals they met Brazil , lost 2: 4 and were eliminated from the world tournament.
