Nicolaus Staphorst (1679–1731) (copperplate engraving by Christian Fritzsch )

Nicolaus Staphorst (born August 1, 1679 in Hamburg ; † July 7, 1731 there ) was a German pastor and church historian .

Life

Staphorst was a son of the businessman Albert Staphorst and received his education at the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg, where he defended a dissertation under Sebastian Edzardus in 1699 . He studied theology in Rostock , where he received his master's degree in 1702 , and Wittenberg . In 1702 he became a candidate for the Ministry of Spirituality in his hometown. In 1705 he was appointed pastor at St. John's Church in Hamburg, and since 1720 he has also been a preacher at the Spinnhaus . He retained both offices until his death in 1731.

Act

In addition to his office as pastor, Staphorst mainly dealt with Hamburg's church history. He published an extensive work, Historia Ecclesiae Hamburgensis diplomatica, that is: Hamburg Church History , Hamburg 1723 to 1729. By the time of his death, five volumes had been published that deal with Hamburg's church history up to 1531 on the basis of documents ; further volumes were planned. Since the work reproduces many documents that have since been destroyed, it is still important as a source collection to this day.

family

His grandfather, Nicolaus Staphorst (1608–1652), was a pastor at St. John's Church and his great-grandfather, Nicolaus Staphorst (1577–1642), was a deacon at the main church of St. Petri .

On August 24, 1706 he married Margaretha Sillem (1683–1746), daughter of the councilor Hieronymus Sillem (1648–1710). The marriage resulted in a son and four daughters, of whom only two daughters reached adulthood. Catharina Margaretha (1715-1758) married in 1735 the first marriage professor at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums , Joachim Dietrich Evers (1695-1741), and in a second marriage 1748 of the rector Buxtehuder school , Lorenz Joachim Müller (1716 to 1771). The second daughter, Hanna Amanda (1718–1786), became the dominatrix of St. John's Monastery .
