As the son of a Hamburg cloth merchant , Müller attended the learned school of the Johanneum from 1732 and the academic high school in his hometown from 1735 . After finishing school, Müller studied theology at the University of Göttingen from 1737 , where he became a member of the Royal German Society of Göttingen. At Easter of 1740 he moved to the University of Leipzig and completed his studies there.

After the death of his first wife, on July 10, 1759, he married Margaretha Catharina von Lengerke (1727–1778), daughter of the Hamburg canon Caspar von Lengerke (1683–1738).
